As I told you in previous posts, Korea has several types of animal cafés, and one of the most popular ones are the Cat Cafés! I personally love cats, although unfortuntately, I’m allergic~ 슬프다 (sad, sad). In Spain or in another country, I would only be able to play with cats if some friend has one and invites me over. However, in Korea I could go play with cats everyday if I wanted! (And if I didn’t mind having a runny nose and skin problems).
A Cat café usually consists on a big room full of cats and cat toys, houses, scratching panels, etc. There will be a couple tables where we can put our coffees, but the drinks are usually not that important as most people just go to enjoy with the cats, not the coffee itself ^^ If you don’t like coffee, they usually have chocolate and some fruit-based drinks. I have been to two Cat cafés, one of them was in Gangnam, and the other one in Hongdae. Today I will review the Cat café in Hongdae, because I was there recently and remember the details better ^^
Cheongchun cat (청춘고양이) is located in Hongdae, near the 홍익어린이공원 (the small park where there’s usually street performances or a flea market called “freemarket” on weekends). It is on a third floor, so make sure to look up. Near the entrance, you will see a fortune cat. Like this:
When you arrive, you will be asked to first take off your shoes and wash your hands with sanitizer. Then you go inside, pay the entrance fee of 9,000W (get a 1,000W discount on Trazy, here). With this fee, you can stay in the café for 2h (if I’m not mistaken) and get one drink. Taking into account a coffee anywhere else costs at least 4,000W, this is not a bad deal at all. Inside the shop, there are usually cute drawings explaining the rules at the café. For example, do not use flash because you will hurt the kitty’s eyes, or do not pull their tail because that makes them anxious, etc.
Cheongchun Cat café has a lot of cats! There are some with really long fur, and some others with barely any. There’s grey, black, white, striped… Most of them are quite lazy, I’m not sure whether it is because they are used to that kind of easy living in a Café, or if it’s because they are somehow drugged. These cats have a very cool playground though, as there are wheels, houses, rugs, and plenty of places where they can jump and hide whenver they don’t feel like socializing.
As we entered the café and went towards our assigned table, a gentlecat was sitting on the chair, like waiting for his date. Victor took a picture of him and then told him to go away so he could sit 🙂 We were sipping on our drinks when another cat, this time snow-white, sat on our table in between the two of us. Yes… cats are the bosses here and they do as they please.
At the Cat café you can buy some cat snacks if you want to attract them more to you, and I think these cost around 3,000W. There are also cat toys that you can grab, but as I said, most cats are pretty lazy and sleepy and won’t respond to the toys.
A lady sitting next to me decided to bring some tuna for the cats, and I think she soon regretted it because there were 3 cats that were continuosly chasing her for tuna, and I saw her trying to approach the most beautiful cats to feed them, but they would just be sleeping, and these 3 younger, more active cats, would be the only ones that seemed intersted in food. Anyway, I left my table to take a couple of pictures, and found this cat, which was probably one of my favorites:
I tried playing with cats, chasing them around, but in the end I realized they mostly just want to use you as a warm pillow, so I changed my strategy and just sat down on a rug with a small blanket on my. Soon, a kitty approached me and made itself comfy on my lap.

¡Hola!
Tal y como les había prometido en un post anterior, hoy vengo a hablarles de los Cat Cafés, o cafeterías donde puedes jugar con gatos mientras te tomas tu bebida. Estos cafés son muy populares y suelen estar llenos en los fines de semana. A mí siempre me han encantado los gatos, pero desafortunadamente, soy alérgica y no puedo mantener uno en casa. En España, la única solución es hacerte amiga de alguien que tenga un gato y conseguir que te invite a su casa, pero aquí en Corea, ¡mucho más fácil! La solución es ir a un cat café y pasar una tarde con estos lindos gatitos.
Los cat café suelen ser una gran sala donde hay decenas de gatos, casitas, juguetes, postes para arañar, etc. Habrá unas cuantas mesas donde tomar el café, aunque la diversión está en dejar tu mesa y sentarte en el suelo con los gatos. La calidad del café suele ser mediocre, pues la atracción son los gatos, no la bebida. Si no toman café, también suelen servir chocolate caliente o bebidas frutales. De momento, he visitado 2 cafés de gatos diferentes, uno en Gangnam y otro en Hongdae. Hoy quiero explicarles más acerca del de Hongdae, pues estuve ahí hace poco.
Cheongchun cat (청춘고양이) está en la zona de Hongdae, cerca de un parque llamado 홍익어린이공원 (es un parque donde suele haber música y bailes callejeros, y donde los fines de semana hay un “freemarket” donde jóvenes artistas venden sus manualidades). El café está en el tercer piso, así que para encontrarlo, hay que mirar hacia arriba 🙂 Sino, cerca de la entrada hay un gato de la fortuna como este:
Al llegar, lo primero que hay que hacer se quitarse los zapatos y lavarse las manos con alcohol. Entras al local, pagas 9,000W de entrada (puedes conseguir un descuento de 1,000W en Trazy, haz clic aquí). La entrada incluye una bebida, y normalmente puedes ocupar tu mesa por 2 horas, aunque no hay nadie realmente vigilando este límite. Una vez has pedido, te enseñan unos dibujos muy graciosos con las reglas del café, como por ejemplo no user flash en las fotos porque puedes cegar al gato, no tirar de sus colas porque los estresas, etc.
¡Cheongchun Cat café tiene muchísimos gatos! Los hay de largo pelaje, casi calvos, grises, negros, blancos, rayados… Eso sí, casi todos son muy vagos y están como dormidos… no sé yo si es porque están acostumbrados a la vida fácil en un cat café, o si de hecho es que están drogados… ¡Esperemos que no! Los gatos tienen muchos sitios donde jugar, y si se cansan de socializar, siempre pueden saltar a las casetas más altas y esconderse de los humanos y otros gatos.
Cuando llegamos a nuestra mesa, un gato caballero me esperaba sentado en la silla, como si yo fuera su cita. Tras un par de fotos, Victor le echó y nos sentamos a beber nuestros cafés. Poco después, vino otro gato, esta vez blanco como la nieve, y se puso a dormir en la mesa, entre nosotros.
Si quieren más atención por parte de los gatos, pueden comprarles comida por unos 3,000W. También hay muchos juguetes, aunque la eficiencia de estos es cuestionable ya que los gatos andan dormidos. Dormidos como estos otros gatos:
Una señora que se sentaba en la mesa de al lado compró atún para los gatos, y creo que pronto se arrepintió porque 3 gatos se abalanzaron sobre ella, pidiendo más y más comida. Yo vi que ella quería dar de comer a otro gato que era muy bonito, pero este estaba dormido y no le dio importancia. Sin embargo, los otros 3 que sí estaban hambrientos, no dejaron a la mujer en paz hasta que se acabó el atún.
Este es uno de mis gatos favoritos del café. Andé detras suya para jugar con él/ella, pero pronto me di cuenta de que ellos no es que quieran jugar, lo único que quieren es un humano que les sirva de almohada. Así que cambié mi estrategia y me senté en una alfombra, con una mantita sobre mi regazo. Y funcionó 😀 Miren ^^
En general, nos lo pasamos muy bien con los gatos, y volveremos a ir, aunque probablemente a otros cafés porque este me queda bien lejos. Si tienen cualquier duda acerca de cafés de gatos, no duden en preguntarme. También hay cafés con perros, pero estos no los he probado aún, ¡así que tendré que ir pronto!
